I have loved the Hillerman books from the beginning and was happy to see Anne take over when her father passed away. Until this book I enjoyed her having kept the series going and I rather enjoyed seeing a more feminine perspective with the main character switching to a female police officer. But this book - no. It was awful. The "mystery" was anything but. I figured out who the villain was very early on in spite of the obvious misdirection attempts used by the author. In addition - the mystery was made secondary to a whining, easily offended woman who seemed to be a weak, rather annoying character. Much of the book was childish dialogue, complaints (never followed through) about male enforcement officers "picking on" poor unappreciated Bernie and a lot of pop psychology nonsense. The actual cause of the death that was supposedly the focus of the story was never really expanded so it never rang true. Some of the descriptions of the area were good, thus the two stars instead of one - but even that was diminished by sad attempts to insert the cultural narrative that Tony Hillerman included so beautifully in his books. It is difficult to write a review that is fair for this book. Tony Hillerman was a master who created wonderful three-dimensional characters and described a beautiful, spiritual world in which they tried to restore harmony in part by solving terrible crimes. Anne Hillerman is doing a service by continuing the lives of some of these beloved characters, but her books are just so much less than her father’s. It is the comparison that I think is perhaps unfair. But on the other hand, I’m not sure that I would read these books at all if I had not been so attached to the books by her father. This story features Bernie Manuelito as our Navajo police officer who is investigating several routine matters and a murder. The police investigations are straightforward, and the resolutions are obvious. It is difficult to not be disappointed in Bernie’s decision making that leads her into danger. It is also difficult not to be impatient with her immature internal monologues about her husband and her career. The dialogue is stilted. The descriptions of the setting read like something from a tourism brochure. Much of the story becomes repetitive as Leaphorn dithers about a trip to Washington and Chee complains about paperwork. I preordered this book because of my admiration for Tony Hillerman’s books and my attachment to his setting and characters. Anne Hillerman’s choice to feature Bernie as her main character was wise, but Bernie has not grown or matured into a character that can stand beside Leaphorn and Chee as an equal. We preorder books by Paul Doiron, Martin Walker, Elly Griffiths, Anne Cleeves, Jean-Luc Bannalec, Jane Harper, Louise Penny, and very few others. This book is not in the same class, but Tony Hillerman was. Better than some, worse than some.
